SCHULL SHOW 2008

The committee of Schull Agricultural Show has put the finishing touches to plans for the 2008 Show, to be held on Sunday, 27 th July.    The combination of Agricultural Show and Country Market has proven to be a huge success and the happy combination of farmers and food producers will be the formula again for this year, together with the hugely popular Pets' Corner. The bedevilment of insurance has ruled out the inclusion of the larger farm animals, but last year's pets' corner attracted a great deal of attention particularly the marvellous fancy fowl and grumpy Gubeen peacock presented by Giana Ferguson and Tadgh McSweeney, the younger, from Courtna. The centerpiece of the day, however, will be the horses and ponies whose proud owners will be putting them through their paces and over the jumps.   The organisers are looking for entries from owners of ponies no greater that 128 cm through to Registered Irish Draught Mares,   Irish Cobs, miniature ponies, Piebalds, Skewbalds and much that is in between. The Tim Joe Daly Memorial Trophy for Champion Foal is one of the high spots along with Open Driving, Road Cart and Junior Whip classes which is always a pleasure to see represented by the impeccably turned out competitors that mark this  section.   Importantly, for breeders,  there is a West Cork Horsebreeders' Co-op Qualifier for 2008 and also the Celtic Ross Hotel Munster Championship qualifier for I.D. Colt or Filly, both potentially avenues for  earning high prize money. Closing date for livestock entries is July19th.   Josephine Ahern, Colla Road Schull is orchestrating all entries for that date.

Competitors in the Hall events, which include the arts and crafts section, bakery and jam making, produce and flower arranging can submit entries on the day. For the serious contender there is a wonderful prize for the person who achieves the most points in the Hall section of the Show. Not only will he or she win the OHM Group Perpetual Trophy but also the Darina Allen Prize, which includes lunch and an afternoon cookery demonstration for two people at the internationally famous Ballymaloe Cookery School .  So entrants are encouraged to enter as many categories as they can – points mean prizes.  Last but not least, everybody loves the Fun Dog show and that will be another highspot on the 27th. There is virtually a class for every type of dog, from the serious gun dog to the happiest dog, for the dog that looks most like its handler to the final class for Dogs that have until that stage not been triumphant.

Any one needing further information or entry forms please contact  028/28707 or check out www.schullie.com

All that is required now is a shining sun and the Show committee will again have had another triumphant year.

The Debs

The budding adults took to the streets this week in all there glamour and handsome stature (that was - of course - before they got to the pub). All the day spent at the hairdressers, the pedicures, the fake tan, the polishing of shoes and the challenge of which tie to wear. This only left one thing - all us parents sitting in our cars, peaking through the mirror to have just one more look to see how beautiful our little babies are. Knowing that as soon as we step out of the car with the 'instamatic' or 'digi' the hairs on the back of their neck starts to rise until, in shame, they disappear inside and venture to the deepest, darkest corner of the pub. Hope rising evermore that their parents won't dare elbow aside all their charming friends and foes just for that last snap ..... until ...... 'poof' and off goes the flash. If looks could kill. Okay, I will admit in shame, that was the last one I took on the day. BUT I'M JUST A DAD!!!!

The Galleries are 'OPEN'

From today you can stroll the streets of Schull and find the most diverse selection of painting and artwork available that I have seen in many years. This year has brought out a huge array of talent throughout the shops in the village.

Some returning and many new artists have flooded the local shops with their artwork. Have a walk 'round and just admire, or better yet, put in an offer on the fabulous pieces on offer.

As the site expands we hope to offer more and more community interests. The local football and hurling schedules are being added to the calendar and we hope to keep the changes of scheduled games current as they are rearranged. Those involved with underage teams (all sports) can email me any information.
